We invite you to join us for the fun opening celebration of “LOTERÍA", our latest art exhibition inspired by the iconic Mexican game of chance. Lotería, which translates to “lottery,” dates back to the 15th century, originally making its way to Mexico from Italy and Spain. The game involves a deck of 54 cards, each featuring a distinct image, such as “El Gallo” (The Rooster), “La Sirena” (The Mermaid), and “El Catrin” (The Dandy). Players mark their boards with beans, coins, or pebbles as a caller announces each card drawn from the deck. The first to complete a predetermined pattern shouts “Loteria!” and claims victory.
For "LOTERÍA", featured artists were given the option of selecting a blank canvas with a random playing card from the existing deck, applying their own personal touch to the original card or creating an entirely new playing card. Participating artists interpreted one of the game's cards with artistic freedom to reinterpret the cards in various styles and mediums, capturing their own interpretations of the game's images, themes, cultural context and symbolism. Come by and see what these talented artists have created!
